In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

From researching and analysing horror film trailers in depth, horror film posters and analysing film magazine front covers, this has gave me a better understanding of the conventions used within this genre. This has helped me to incorporate some of these conventions into my own horror trailer, poster and magazine front cover, i also decided to challenge some conventions.

Our storyline could be seen as conventional as it is a group of friends that go on a camping trip and they all end up being killed, however ours has a dark meaning behind their killings and its someone seeking revenge. We decided to use typical characters to help the audience relate to them.

Although following most conventions we decided to challenge conventions by having an all girl cast which is very un-typical horror films as they normally include a mixture of male and female characters however i still think that this will appeal to our target audience. We also chose to use the antagonist as a girl as it will not be what the audience is expecting as in most horror films they use a male antagonist or a scary creature.

In the opening of our film trailer we included a production company logo, which we created ourselves in photoshop. We made it to look sinister and dark to fit with the horror genre, we also created in the same style as real film production company logos. We used the style of the clouded background and the starts surrounding our production company name. It is conventional of any film to include the production company logo at the beginning of any film as it makes the audience aware of who created it and also gives the audience an insight to what genre of film it is as some film production companies are associated with a particular genre. This is why we made ours dark, with an eerie feel to it so the audience will know its a horror film and it fits in with the horror genre.

When creating our trailer we included many conventions such as using freytags triangle. Our trailer starts off at a slow pace showing the girls at school then setting off on their camping trip. The pace quickens and draws the audience in, straight after is the climax where the clips are much shorter and faster, the pace of the film slows again before the conclusion. The editing of our trailer also fits in with conventions we start of with slow editing using longer clips, then when the action starts build we cut up the clips to make them shorter and even speeded up the pace of some of the clips this was to match the speed of the music to show to the audience that the action was rising to make them excited yet anxious to what it was building up to creating this tension is very conventional of horror trailers. We then added a twist, when the action had fallen and the music had stopped, after the caption 'Coming soon' we used a short clip of one of our characters being dragged of into darkness, as the music has already stopped the diegetic scream is really loud and will make the audience jump. The clip is normally memorable as it is the last thing the audience see. Although this is not conventional of freytags pyramid, it is conventional of some horror films we have researched.

Like many trailers we have used captions to help the audience underestand what is going on and the storyline and they help to build suspense. We had to cut down our captions as originally we had to many and it would make the audience loose focus so we removed some and make them shorter and more to the point. They was also not very appealing to the audience as they were red writing on a plain black background to make them more interesting we added red blood splats to make a clear link to our horror trailer and the violence it contains. We also changed the font to the same font as the title on the film poster and on the film magazine, so the audience can make a clear link between all 3 of them. To make the captions more interesting they start off small and get bigger so they appear to be coming forwards towards the screen.

For the caption of our film title, following conventions we changed the style slightly so it stood out from the other captions. And our last caption included coming soon a typical convention of teaser trailer.

The editing is a very important part of film trailers. We edited our film in typical horror trailer style by building up the tension. To create the tension and suspense we needed to edit our footage in a conventional and effective way. We started off by editing our footage for the beginning by changing it black and white to symbolise to the audience that its the past, we kept the shots quite long to help tell the story. This all changes when the girls end up the forest we cut the shots really short so they are more fast paced to help build the tension to build to the climax, we then use a couple of longer shots for the falling action. We really wanted to edit our footage to create a tense atmosphere that you get in most horror trailers.

For our trailer we mainly used non-diegetic sound we decided to use just one soundtrack called 'chainsaw horror' as we thought it fitted our trailer well and towards the end we faded it out slowly. We did try to use two different soundtracks a slow one for the beginning and a more fast paced one for the climax however we though it didn't sound very professional the cut from one to the other was too noticeable and sounded messy.

Although we didn't include any dialogue, throughout the trailer we did emphasise certain diegetic sounds such as, screams, heavy breathing and the paper ball hitting jodie's face. However through watching the trailer back and audience feed back we came to find that the screaming and heavy breathing sounds were distracting and unnecessary so we muted them from all the clips and just used the soundtrack. However the sound of the paper ball hitting jodie's face is necessary as it is an important part of our storyline so we emphasised this by repeating the shot three times each time zooming in on her face, including the sound on this clip really helps the audience understand the impact of the ball hitting her face. We also left the loud scream on the last clip at the end to really catch the audiences attention.

We followed the conventions of mise on scene which in horror films are typically isolated locations in the dark at night time, which is what people associate with horror films. So we filmed in a forest during the night although this gives us a conventional and realistic scary feel, it was also very hard to film some shots and some shots were not of the best quality as we had very limited lighting. When we uploaded the footage onto the macs some shots the lighting was very poor and made the shot very dim and hard to see so we edited some of the shots on Premier pro to lighten them to make them easier to see and much clearer. On one shot in particular we used the lighting to highlight what we wanted the audience to be focused on. We also used the lighting in conventional way from the genre film noir, chiaroscuro can affect the mood of a person by the way the light is separated and shines on the character. To create this style we used the car headlights to shine on the characters faces to show their facial expressions and emotion.

Poster - Before producing our film poster i googled many different film posters and researched 3 existing film posters in depth to understand the conventions, so that i could use some conventions in our poster to. While analysing film posters i came across the poster for the film 'The eye' this had the same look/layout that we wanted to acheive so we used this to help us to create our poster.

We didnt want a busy crowed poster we wanted to keep it simple but effective. To link with the title of the film we used an eye for the main image dominating the page, also very personal to the veiwer staring into the eye. We made sure the audience could tell that it is a females eye as we have an all girl cast. To link to our other promo pack our magazine front cover the main image used on their of the 5 girls we used in the pupil of the eye, makes the audience wonder if they are watching someone or they are being watched this also fits in with out tagline 'somebodys watching...' this also signifies to the audience that they are not sure who is watching who.
We followed the typical conventions by having the film title the largest peice of text on the page so it stands out. The release date and the small text at the bottom of the page informing us of the cast the film companies, directors and producers. Also including the website at the bottom like most typical posters. We tried to make ours in the same style of writing as The Eye film poster to make ours look as authentic as possible.

Magazine front cover - We decided to challenge conventions for our magazine front cover as by researching many film magazine front covers we noticed that only one or two people are featured on the front page however we wanted to use 5 of the main people, we came across a few film magazines that did this aswell.

We like the layout of the main image from this magazine the formation of the girls and the way they are staring straight at the audience, we used an image like this for our front cover of our main 5 characters. We followed conventions by using the main colours from our trailer captions and our poster, red white and black, these colours also help to make our magazine stand out and are commonly used in film magazines. We placed the magazine name at the centre of the top of the page and above we included a skyline. Underneath the title we included the issue number and website very conventional of film magazines. We included a pug on the left side of the page white with a red background to stand out. We placed the film title in the middle of the page in the same font we have used throughout. Text on each side of the page and a barcode in the bottom right corner.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Before a film is released, there are different forms of advertising to help entice people to go and watch the film. This includes a film trailer, as well as a film poster and a magazine front cover to create a synergistic campaign.

I think that the combination of my main product and ancillary texts are very effective. As well as creating a film trailer we created two promo packs to accompany it we produced a film magazine front cover and poster. It was really important to combine the three so they relate to each other and create a cohesive theme. We have used the same colours throughout our trailer, magazine and poster, a combination of red black and white as they are strong bold colours that stand out and can also represent the horror genre. We used black and red throughout our trailer for the captions.

The main image on the magazine front cover we used in our poster subtly by placing it in the eye not to it stands out but so it is noticable.

We have also used the same font bison throughout for An Eye For An Eye like a brand so the audience recognises the connection between them all, we used it in the trailer on the poster and on the magazine.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

By creating a questionnaire on our blogs we was able to gain feedback from our target audience to see and understand their needs and expectations, we was then able to take that into account and plan our trailer and promo packs around their answers. This was helpful when it came to filming the trailer, choosing the locations and characters, editing the trailer, choosing the music and designing the magazine front cover and poster.

After filming and editing the trailer we showed it to a number of people and the feedback we received was they all recognized it was a horror trailer straight away the mise en scene and music helped them understand that so we understood the genre well. They also thought the music fitted in well with what was going on as it starts off slow and then fastens when the action rises. However one thing that many people commented on was the storyline that they didnt seem to understand it and that we didnt portray jodie being bullied well enough. Taking their comments on board we went out and filmed a few more scenes showing Jodie getting bullied to make the audience realise that she has been getting bullied for a long time and also a shot of her in the mirror showing her eye to link it back to the title of the film and reinforce to the audience the damage they have done to her eye as from the feedback the audience was not clear on that aspect, we also turned all the shots of Jodie getting bullied black and white to signify to the audience that it was in the past.

Someone suggested to add in a shot right at the end after the caption 'coming soon' one that will stick in the audiences mind so we filmed a shot of one of our characters getting dragged off with a loud scream. Another person suggested that we make our captions go from big to small to make them looking like they are coming forwards towards the screen to make them look a bit better we thought this was a good idea so while editing the trailer we changed our captions font to bison the same font used in the ancillary work and changed the background to blood splats to fit to the horror genre and also listened to our feedback and made the captions get bigger to make them look as if they are getting closer to the screen. People thought that the scenes of the car driving off were too shaky so we were able to go out and re film them using a tripod making the shots look much more professional.

After adding all the changes and finishing touches to the trailer we then showed the same people and new people and asked them what they thought, all their opinions where positive they were all happy with the acting skills, the camera shots, angles, music and captions.

We then showed people of our target audience our film poster and their was alot of negative feedback such as the quaility of the picture was bad and wasnt a high enough standard for a film poster so we retook the photo on a higher mega pixel camera and added a photo of the girls inside the eye. After showing them the redone and finished film poster they all agreed it was much better and now looked like a professional film poster.

Before After

We also showed them our magazine front cover we received very good feedback the only criticism we did get was that the text down the side of the page was slighly difficult to read to we added colour boxes behind the writing to make it easier to read.

Overall our audience feedback has been very important and helpful to us and made our trailer and promo packs much better and also appeal to our target audience alot more.

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Throughout the project we have used a wide range of media of media technologies to construct the 3 products.

Throughout the whole project google was of use to me anything specific i needed to know i could search on google, it was especially useful during the research stages as i was able to research existing horror film posters and magazine front cover to give me an insight to conventions. I was also able to look up images for my mood board to give me inspiration. Youtube was also very helpful to search for horror film trailers to analyse in depth and use for my grids of nine. We also used it to convert our trailer to quick time, post it to you tube and then post it on our blogs.

I used scribd to upload my documents to then blogger to put all my work on. Using blogger was a very efficient and easy way to assemble my coursework as you can write posts, upload documents, add images and videos easily. I was also able to work from home any time on my blog. Was also able to produce a poll/questionnaire which really helped me gain audience feedback to improve my work.

After i had finished analysing and researching existing products we moved onto filming. We used a Sony handycam HDR-XR100 a hd video camera that we used to film everything, we also used a tripod to get the steady shots we needed. We also used the video camera to take pictures of locations ect.

Once all the footage was done we uploaded it to the apple computer then used the programme Adobe PremierPro to edit and put together all our footage to create our trailer. It allowed us to put the clips we wanted to use on a timeline and change them to the length that we needed then edit all of our clips and add audio, effects and captions, change the the lighting and speed up or slow down clips.

We also used Adobe photoshop cs4 and elements 8 to create and edit both our promo packs. Doing photography at school and using photoshop in AS media i felt confident in using it to create our ancillary products. It allowed us to crop the photos, change them black and white and by using such tools as the lassoo tool, text tool, dodge tool and using layers it helped to create a successful magazine front cover and poster.

Audience feedback

After showing our target audience our final movie trailer here was some of the responses we got:

"Wow, well done guys the music is great and the heart beat at the end really adds effect. Love the last shot!"

"It really tells the story well and i like the name of the film"

"Its really good, like how start off slow and gets much faster"

"Really like the woods bit, good acting"

The editing process

To edit our footage and create our trailer we used the software Adobe premier pro.

After every filming session we would upload our footage by clicking onto file then import then we chose the footage that we wanted to upoload, once it had uploading it appeared in the box in the top left corner of the page. We could then click on each recording to see if it could be used in our trailer if the recording was not right then we would delete it and if it was a scene we was going to use we would then drag it to the timeline.

We put all the clips we were going to use on the timeline and put them in order so we could organise them.

One of the most important tools we used on this software was the razor tool, this was used to cut down clips to however long or short we wanted them.

We had to add in captions that we had created and fit them into the timeline in the right places. We wanted our captions to start small and to get bigger to do this we double clicked on the selected caption on the time line then at the top of the page the video effect control opened up and we changed it on there we clicked on scale and at the start of the clip changed the scale to 50 we then added another point at the end of the clip and changed it to 100 so the righting goes from small to big and looking like it coming forward to the screen.

For the caption of the title we decided to change it slightly to make it stand out to the audience so we changed the gradient of the text. And we also made the captions dip to black to give it a more professional finish.

We then uploaded the music that we wanted and placed it underneath the footage on the timeline to ensure that it was in the right place and in time. We also used the razor to cut the music to make it the right length. We also adjusted the audio at the side of the timeline we could mute the diagetic sounds from the clips or we could adjust certain sounds to make them louder. We muted all of our sound so all that you could hear was the music. We made the ball hitting jodies face in the beginning alot louder to emphasise how hard it was thrown, the car breaking down and the engine not starting also to emphasise to the audicence how bad it was. Heavy breathing we turned up and the scream at the end. So we made sure we edited all of the audio to sound right and be in time with the footage.

The last of all we added some affects to make the trailer better. The first few clips we turned black and white as it was a memory. We also added dip to black after most of the clips in the beginning section. After we had added all the effects that we had needed we was finished and we rendered all of the clips. We also edited the lighting in several clips to make them much brighter as they were filmed in the dark, we also used the lighting to highlight areas we wanted the audience to focus on e.g. the petrol light in the car.

Main characters/actors

Our main characters are 5 friends. One outsider. We wanted them to all be girls.

The muderer- jodie. We chose a girl for the character of the murderer as we wanted to challenge conventions. Typically in horrors the murderer is usually male. We thought that Jodie fit the part well as you wouldn't suspect her.

The survivor - philippa

The 'typical dumb one' - Natalie

The 'geek' - Chelsey

The 'loud' one - Miranda

The tom boy - Kelsey

Questionaire results

Our group created a questionnaire regarding to horror trailers we did this so we could see what our target audience's opinions were. In doing this, we found out what there likes and expectations are for a movie.
This has allowed me to see the feedback of what my target audience thinks of my ideas and we could use these answers and opinions when editing together our horror trailer which would help us to appeal our target market
After posting the questionaire on our blogs we analysed the feedback:

Are you male or female?
The feedback from this was both male and female. So we are aiming to target both genders.

How old are you?
The majority of people that answered this was in the age bracket of 16-19 but close behind was 20+ so we are aiming our trailer to people between 16- early 20's.

What genre of movies do you prefer to watch?
Horror was the chosen genre with comedy a close second. This is one of the reasons we chose to do a horror so we could really appeal to our target audience's wants and interests.

What location is best for a horror trailer to be filmed in?
Forrest/woods was most popular so that is why we chose to film most of our trailer in the woods.

Should the protagonist be male or female?
It is clear to see from the results that is split down the middle half of the votes think a female and half think a male. Our group after considering both chose to use a female for our protagonist just to challenge conventions and make our trailer a bit more unusual and interesting.

Do you think that captions would be beneficial to incude in our trailer?
More people voted for yes and we also agree as we think that captions help to understand a trailer and our target audience think they will be benefical to use so thats why we incuded captions.

What type of sound or music would you like to hear in a horror trailer?
Majority of the votes was for both so to incorporate this in our trailer we started off the beginning of the trailer with slow music, then when the action started building we used faster paced music.

Which name do you prefer for a film magazine?
This question was important for us as we did not know which name to choose and we was really interested in our audiences opinions and they voted for The flicks so that is the name we chose for our magazine.

After analysing the results we can see that we are aiming our trailer as both genders aged 16- mid 20's.

We used their answers and opinions very carefully making sure we tried to incorporate everything we found out into our trailer to make it appeal to them and meet their expectations.

Detailed storyboard

After putting all our initial ideas together we created a storyboard. Each box showing what shot we wanted to produce and what order and where we wanted the captions to go. We used this when we went out filming to know what scenes we needed to shoot and how we wanted to do them but as we started filming, we started changing some things as some of our original ideas we were not able to film and our ideas changed as we went along.

This is a list we made of every single shot we wanted for the beginning, the middle and the end.
